Whatever project or task you’re working on, chances are there is an advocate out there who has been where you are, and can offer feedback or input. This may be silly, but we have “Fur Fridays” in our “watercooler” channel in Slack, where we all share photos of our companion animals on a weekly basis, which is guaranteed brooke haggerty to bring all of us a smile. And I know just seeing my fellow advocates in the movement achieve wins for animals gives me so much hope, and importantly, reminds me that we’re not in this alone. Finally, we recently conducted a poll on the public’s understanding of COVID-19’s relationship with animals.

Upcoming Projects

By directly supporting hundreds of organizations in our movement, we help advocates apply data to their campaigns and strategies. In 2019, he created the organization to address gaps in technology & data for the animal protection movement. Companies that exploit or harm animals spend millions of dollars on research, marketing, and advertising – we are here to level the information playing field. They know how to persuade people to buy things and they know how to sway public opinion to their advantage.

Thank You For Your Support

Brooke has an MA in Human Behavior, a BA in English, and certifications in Marketing and Nonprofit Management. We are also fortunate to have the support of dozens of dedicated volunteers, who write and edit articles in our research library and contribute to a variety of special projects. Don’t miss our 2020 practicum student Joy McLeod’s detailed analysis of how advocates got their start in animal advocacy, just one example of the many volunteer contributions to our work this year. We published the fourth and fifth editions of our data-packed Faunalytics Fundamentals series. Our visually engaging and easily shareable Wildlife Fundamentals and Zoonoses Fundamentals join our ever-growing resource hub of infographics on companion animals, farmed animals, and animals used in research.

New ResourcesOur Research Advice Center will soon include a new Research Glossary that outlines numerous academic terms, as well as examples to contextualize each term. Our goal is to help everyday advocates better understand and apply research to their work. Additionally, Brooke is a former board member and programming chair for the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of San Diego, and currently volunteers as a mentor with SDSU’s student mentorship program.

  • I have a great group of fellow executive directors whom I reach out to with operations and fundraising questions, and it has saved me so much time.
  • I’m also particularly excited about the studies we have planned to support legislative advocacy.
  • As a pandemic swept the globe, our COVID-19 & Animals poll was among the first to gauge the U.S. public’s understanding of this virus and its connection to our treatment of animals used for food.
  • I grew up surrounded by animals and carried a deep empathy for all living beings throughout my childhood.
  • We value your input and encourage you to reach out to our support team if you encounter any issues.
  • This means that while packaging must be fairly standardized, targeting messages to specific groups is the smartest strategy.
  • This suggests that average meat consumption may remain similar, but it also implies that there are potentially new customers out there willing to try plant-based products.

We’ll be assessing opportunities to increase our impact, and we’ll be working hard to live up to our status as an Animal Charity Evaluators Recommended Charity. Read on to learn all about our upcoming plans, and how you can help us succeed in our mission. Newly Translated ResourcesWe’re excited to announce that a selection of our research and resources are now available in nine different languages! We’ve prioritized the most relevant studies for starters, and hope to expand our translated library to further support advocates around the globe. Learning about racial inequity through the lens of data analysis not only improves the efficacy of my animal advocacy, but it fuels my commitment to fighting all forms of oppression. https://www.bookstime.com/ is the Executive Director at Faunalytics, a nonprofit that conducts and shares animal advocacy research.

Brooke has an MA in Human Behavior and certifications in Marketing and Nonprofit Management. Internally, our team members are all incredibly supportive of one another, are pretty open about mental wellbeing, and honest about when we need to step away for a bit (which is important to recognize, and should be honored). We’ve made small changes in that regard; for example, we call “sick time” “self/mental care time” instead to encourage folks to use paid time off for their mental well being, not just physical wellness. Many of us on the team have previously been involved with pretty heavy work, such as investigations or other advocacy that’s a lot harder on the soul. The depressing aspects of our day-to-day work here at Faunalytics are usually in the form of data, for example, our Global Slaughter Statistics resource is just heartbreaking. Previously she served as the executive director, and later as a board member, for the Foundation for Animal Care and Education, and also worked as a humane educator for the Animal Protection and Rescue League.

  • The first was our cross-national study where we looked at the BRIC countries in terms of attitudes toward farmed animals, and intentions and behavior for diet.
  • So yes, no one clear thing, but we are trying to come up with a really comprehensive list and figure out what the best options are from that.
  • We’ve increased our coverage of underrepresented advocates, highlighting studies about the experiences of vegans of color, cultural barriers to veganism, and the experiences of vegan women over 50.
  • Faunalytics was established in 2000, though at the time, much of our work was focused on research conducted on behalf of other organizations.
  • A guiding principle that shapes her understanding of animal issues is that creating meaningful change for animals is intimately tied to advocating for social and environmental justice.
  • To mark the occasion, we highlighted 22 species we’ve covered from our collection of over two dozen original research studies and from the thousands of articles in our library.

We are also doing a pretty robust board self-evaluation right now where we are going through different responsibilities and identifying areas or opportunities for improvements. Our labeling study What To Call Plant-Based Alternatives found that although the term plant-based has risen in popularity, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to labeling. This means that while packaging must be fairly standardized, targeting messages to specific groups is the smartest strategy. Our study outlined how various demographics respond to various labels so vegan businesses can apply our findings directly to their clientele base. Equally important is understanding how to communicate with them, and what they intend to do.
